PANEL: WRITING IN TUMULTUOUS TIMES

Over time, the shape of the Mississippi River Delta has changed due to the industrial pillaging of its banks, the erosion of its shores, and the sediment deposits at its many turns. In the same way, our political atmosphere shifts as we continue to grapple with the colonial and racist past of our country and struggle against an uncertain future. In the flood of changes that have come in the past year alone, how can we attempt to make an impact with our writing? In what ways can we respond to the present, while preparing for the future? This panel explores how writers might respond politically, psychologically, and personally to our tumultuous times in order to inspire hope.

PANEL: PATHS TO PROFESSIONALIZATION

Like a delta, writers’ career paths often begin in one place, a love for writing, and then branch off in many different directions. Some writers further their career by pursuing an MFA or life in academia. Others find success with a wide variety of career paths. In this panel, writers will discuss their personal paths to becoming professional writers and answer questions about work-life balance with writing, writing life and career options outside of academia, and how to go about pitching, getting an agent, and landing a book deal.
